Our Story - Commanda Sunset Campsite
The owner, Randy Commanda is a proud Algonquin member in the unceded First Nation Territory of Pikwakanagan, formally known as Indian Reserve #39, adjacent to the hamlet of Golden Lake.
Randy is the youngest in a large family of 8 siblings and he was raised in Golden Lake on the First Nation Territory of Pikwakanagan. Growing up they learned how to hunt, fish, and trap, while living off the land. His father, the late William Commanda, served as Chief from April 1963 to September 1975. His mother, the late Mary Commanda, was a teacher of native dance and drumming, language, and history for the community. Traditional dancing and language had disappeared from the community many years before she began teaching the young people. Her efforts helped to bring the generations together and promoted pride in native culture. She also organized small tours to introduce native culture to non-native people.
Randy and his partner Donna Murray operate Commanda Sunset Campsite. Donna was born and raised in Fredricton, NB. Donna has four beautiful children from her late husband and twelve grandchildren.
Randy's only son Samuel also has a hand in the business, so he can eventually take over the business. Samuel has two beautiful sons, Casey and Hugo and he runs the other family business, Randy Commanda Forestry.
